In the 1990s I was in a queue at the airport when I realised it had come to a standstill because a young man at the front of the queue had too much luggage. He was a student going home to former Yugoslavia with all his books. The airline people were very impatient with him but it seemed that he hadn't realised there was a weight limit and now they wanted to charge him a lot of money, or leave all his study books behind. He only had about £5 left to get home. First of all, I went to try to persuade the airline to let the luggage go through free of charge, but when this failed I paid the excess for him. He was embarrassed, so in the end we had a very small coffee together and I let him pay, just to say thank you. I decided I would never tell anyone about this. So can you keep a secret now that I have told you?!
